UNESCO Ambassador Vishal Sharma visits INCOIS, supports ocean observation satellite

UNESCO Ambassador Vishal Sharma visits INCOIS on Monday and expressed strong support for the proposal to launch a dedicated ocean observation satellite. He said such a satellite would significantly strengthen ocean monitoring, climate research, and disaster preparedness.
During his visit to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Mr. Sharma interacted with scientists and officials to understand the institute’s work in ocean observations, early warning systems, and marine data services. He was briefed on INCOIS’s role in providing tsunami alerts, cyclone advisories, and ocean state forecasts to multiple stakeholders.
Mr. Sharma said oceans play a critical role in regulating climate and supporting livelihoods, especially for coastal communities. He stressed the need for advanced space-based monitoring tools to improve data accuracy and long-term ocean research.
Scientists explained how a dedicated satellite would enhance real-time tracking of ocean parameters such as temperature, currents, and sea level changes. They said this would also support global climate commitments and sustainable ocean governance
