Madras High Court Orders TN Govt to Finalize SOP for Political Rallies by January 5

The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to notify the final Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for political meetings and rallies before January 5.
Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan said the court would not order changes to the draft SOP, as it remains subject to judicial review.
The judges emphasized that the final SOP should provide clear guidelines for political parties to conduct meetings and rallies safely and in accordance with the law.
The court’s decision ensures that authorities and political parties have a concrete framework well ahead of upcoming events, reducing confusion and disputes.
Officials in the state government were instructed to finalize the SOP promptly and communicate it to all concerned parties.
The ruling highlights the importance of balancing public safety with democratic rights, ensuring political activities can proceed smoothly while adhering to legal norms.
