Tension escalated in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Monday after an eviction-related protest turned violent. Angry demonstrators set fire to the ancestral house of BJP leader and KAAC chief executive member Tuliram Ronghang in Donkamukam. Stones were also hurled, triggering panic across the area.

Police intervened to disperse the crowd as the situation spiralled out of control. At least three people sustained injuries during the clash. Authorities deployed additional police forces, CRPF units, and commandos to restore order. The district administration imposed prohibitory orders to prevent further violence.

The protest stemmed from long-standing demands to clear alleged encroachments on PGR and VGR land. These grazing reserves fall under the Sixth Schedule and restrict non-tribal occupation. Tribal organisations have raised eviction demands for years.

The unrest intensified after nine hunger strikers from the Pelangpi area were shifted for medical treatment. Locals believed the move amounted to arrests, which sparked anger. Police officials clarified that health concerns prompted the transfer.

Tuliram Ronghang said no arrests took place and termed the violence a result of misunderstanding. He stressed that eviction cannot proceed while the matter remains pending before the High Court.
