Naidu Orders Review of Excise Policies, Eyes Haryana Model for Belt Shops
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed the Excise Department to study Haryana’s sub-lease model for liquor shops to curb irregularities in belt shops and enhance revenue collection. Speaking to officials in Vijayawada, he emphasised the need to tighten checks through hologram labels on liquor bottles, strengthen monitoring, and ensure compliance with existing regulations.
Naidu also called for a review of the exemption granted to bars from additional excise tax and urged promotion of digital payments at liquor outlets to improve transparency. He stressed that reforms in liquor shop allotment should accompany technological measures to prevent leakages and irregular practices.
The Chief Minister noted that excise revenue had reached ₹7,041 crore, underlining the sector’s importance to the State’s finances. Officials were instructed to submit a comprehensive report on the feasibility of adopting the sub-lease system and other reforms to streamline operations while protecting public interest.
