The Punjab government has convened a special session of the Vidhan Sabha today, Tuesday. The session will focus on the Centre’s decision to rename and amend the MGNREGA scheme. The Union government has renamed the scheme as VB-GRAM-G, drawing strong criticism from the state.

The House will move a resolution opposing the changes to the MGNREGA Act. The state government plans to demand withdrawal of the amendments. There will be no Question Hour or Zero Hour during the session. Proceedings will begin at 11 am under Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.

The session will open with tributes to the four Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, remembering their historic martyrdom. The House will also pay homage to former Punjab Governor Shivraj Chauhan, former minister Jagtar Singh Multani, former minister of state Tara Singh Ladle, and former MLA Tarlochan Singh Sandh.

Nine reports will be tabled during the sitting. The opposition is expected to corner the government on law and order and other issues, raising the chances of heated exchanges.

The debate will focus on concerns over reduced employment guarantees, higher financial burden on states, and weakening of panchayat powers. The government argues that the new framework threatens workers’ rights, especially for women, Scheduled Castes, and landless labourers.
