Chennai Teachers Detained Again Protesting for Equal Pay

Several teachers in Chennai were detained once again while protesting for “equal pay for equal work,” highlighting a persistent pay disparity in the education sector. The demonstrations, which began on Friday, December 26, 2025, have drawn attention to the unequal compensation faced by contractual and temporary teachers compared to their permanent counterparts, despite performing similar duties.
Protestors gathered outside key administrative offices, demanding immediate government intervention to regularise their positions and ensure parity in salaries. The teachers argued that the ongoing pay gap has caused financial hardship and undermines the morale of dedicated educators.
Police officials intervened to manage the crowd and detained several participants to prevent escalation, while allowing peaceful protest in designated areas. Teachers’ associations reiterated their demand for a long-term solution and warned of intensified agitations if the government fails to address their grievances promptly.
The protests have sparked wider debate on educational reforms, employment rights, and equitable treatment of teaching staff in Tamil Nadu.
