Data Centres in Vizag: Boon for Growth or Strain on Resources?
Proposed data centres in Visakhapatnam have sparked a debate over whether they will prove to be a boon or a bane for the city. Industry experts have welcomed announcements by major technology companies, saying large-scale data centre investments could generate direct and indirect employment, attract allied industries, and position Vizag as India’s leading data centre hub. They argue that such projects would strengthen the city’s digital infrastructure and boost long-term economic growth.
However, environmental activists and urban planners have expressed concern over the heavy demand data centres place on critical resources, particularly water and power. They warn that large facilities require continuous electricity and significant cooling systems, which could strain Vizag’s already stretched resources and impact local communities. Concerns have also been raised about land use, carbon emissions, and the need for sustainable planning.
Experts suggest that while data centres offer clear economic advantages, their development must be guided by strict environmental safeguards, efficient resource management, and renewable energy use to ensure balanced and sustainable growth for the city.
