APERC Approves ₹4,498 Crore True-Up Charges for State DISCOMs

The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has approved true-up charges of ₹4,498 crore for the State’s electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs). The three DISCOMs had initially proposed true-up charges totaling ₹5,933 crore for adjustments related to past revenue and expenditure. However, after accounting for a previous adjustment of ₹1,435 crore made in the Commission’s earlier orders, the final approved amount was reduced.
True-up charges are calculated to balance any gap between the actual costs incurred by DISCOMs and the revenue collected from consumers during a financial year. The APERC stated that the approved amount would ensure that the distribution companies can maintain financial stability while continuing to provide reliable electricity supply to households and industries.
The Commission’s decision is expected to bring clarity to tariffs and help avoid sudden financial stress on DISCOMs. It also underscores the regulatory authority’s role in maintaining a fair balance between consumer interests and the operational sustainability of power utilities.
