Priyanka Gandhi Assam battle has taken centre stage as Congress makes a bold move ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The party has handed Priyanka Gandhi charge of Assam, marking her first direct responsibility in a state Assembly contest. Her entry has sharpened the political contest in the northeastern state.

Congress aims to regain lost ground in Assam, where the BJP remains strong under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. On the other side, Union Home Minister Amit Shah continues to shape BJP’s election strategy. This development sets up a rare face-off between two key political strategists.

The Congress appointed Priyanka Gandhi as chairperson of the state screening committee. Her team includes Yashomati Thakur, Imran Masood, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and Dr Sirivella Prasad. The party has projected Gaurav Gogoi as its chief ministerial face in Assam.

The BJP expects to contest the election under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership. Shah will likely oversee campaign planning, as he has done in several recent state victories.

Political interest has surged as Assam joins West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in the 2026 election cycle. With 126 Assembly seats at stake, Assam remains crucial for both sides. Priyanka Gandhi’s entry has added momentum and unpredictability to the contest, raising questions about whether Congress can disrupt BJP’s dominance.
