Tripura Chief Minister has ordered all schools in the state to remain closed from January 6 to January 10 due to severe cold weather. The decision aims to protect students from freezing temperatures and harsh winter winds. The Education Department issued the notification on Monday, instructing government and private schools to follow the order.
Officials said temperatures have dropped sharply in several districts, especially in hilly and northern areas. Early morning readings fell below normal levels, making travel to schools risky for children. Authorities warned that prolonged exposure to cold could lead to health issues such as fever and respiratory problems.
Parents and teachers welcomed the move. Many parents had expressed concern about children waiting for transport in freezing conditions. Teachers said the break will give students time to stay warm and stay healthy. The State Disaster Management Authority reported a rise in cold-related health complaints in local clinics over the past week.
The Chief Minister advised parents to ensure children wear warm clothing and take precautions. He also asked schools to prepare classrooms safely for when students return. Medical teams were instructed to reach vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, to offer guidance and assistance.
Weather experts said the cold wave is part of a larger system affecting the northeast and may continue for several more days. They advised people to limit early morning travel and keep warm blankets and heaters ready at home.
Authorities said they will review weather conditions before January 11 and decide if schools should reopen as planned. Meanwhile, online classes may continue so that students do not miss lessons.
The government stressed that student safety remains a top priority and urged families and schools to follow guidelines until normal conditions return.
