Punjab Police gunned down one accused linked to the murder of an Aam Aadmi Party sarpanch in Tarn Taran district. The encounter took place in the Bhikhiwind area late Tuesday night. Police identified the accused as Harnoor alias Noor.
Harnoor played a key role in the killing of village Valtodha sarpanch Jarmal Singh. The murder shocked the region earlier this month. Armed assailants shot Singh dead on January 4 during a wedding function. He died on the spot after sustained firing inside the venue.
Police said Harnoor acted as a main field operator for gangster Prabha Dassual. The gangster allegedly claimed responsibility for the murder through a social media post. Officials confirmed Harnoor helped in planning and conducting reconnaissance before the attack.
DIG Sneha Deep Sharma said the CIA staff and Anti-Gangster Task Force received specific intelligence inputs. Teams learned a wanted shooter would pass through the area on a motorcycle. Police set up barricades and launched a search operation.
When police attempted to stop the suspect, he opened fire. Police retaliated in self-defence, killing Harnoor in the exchange. Authorities recovered weapons from the spot.
Police continue investigations with Amritsar units to identify other conspirators. Officials said the operation reflects zero tolerance towards gang violence in Punjab.
