US Greenland tensions talks as Rubio meets Denmark over Trump claims

Greenland

The United States and Denmark will hold high-level talks next week amid rising disputes over Greenland. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to meet Danish leaders after sharp remarks from President Donald Trump. Trump renewed calls for Washington to take control of Greenland on security grounds. He said military force always remains an option, raising alarm across Europe.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed that Denmark and Greenland requested the meeting. He said both governments want to correct what they see as misunderstandings in Washington. Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said the talks aim to address strong US statements. She stressed the need for clarity on Greenland’s status and intentions.

European leaders issued a joint warning on Tuesday. They said the territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland must be respected. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also responded firmly. She warned that any US attack on Greenland would destroy NATO and decades of shared security.

Trump argues that Greenland holds strategic value in the Arctic. He cites growing Chinese and Russian activity in the region. Rubio told US lawmakers that the administration prefers a negotiated purchase. He said diplomacy, not force, remains the intended path. Greenland remains a self-governing Danish territory and a member of the NATO framework.
