Telangana Congress Plans Statewide Stir Against Changes to MGNREGS
The Telangana Congress has announced plans for a State-wide agitation opposing the Centre’s proposed changes to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), alleging that they would weaken the programme and hurt rural livelihoods. Senior party leaders said the protest would highlight issues such as delayed wage payments, reduced workdays and the Centre’s alleged attempt to dilute the rights-based nature of the scheme.
Congress leaders accused the BJP-led Union government of undermining MGNREGS, which they said had been a lifeline for rural poor, women and marginal farmers, especially during times of economic distress. They demanded immediate release of pending dues and restoration of adequate funding.
As part of the agitation, the party plans to organise rallies, dharnas and public meetings across districts. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be invited to participate in key events to lend national prominence to the movement, party sources said.
