Assam Opposition Alleges Electoral Roll Manipulation, Files Police Complaint Against BJP
Opposition parties in Assam on Friday lodged a police complaint accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to manipulate electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections. The complaint was filed in Guwahati, alleging that senior BJP leaders conspired to illegally delete voters’ names from the rolls.
According to the Opposition, Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia allegedly instructed State Health Minister Ashok Singhal during an online meeting held on January 4 to take steps to remove certain voters from the electoral list. Opposition leaders claimed that the directive was aimed at influencing election outcomes and undermining the democratic process.
They described the alleged act as a serious violation of the Representation of the People Act and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation. The parties also urged the Election Commission of India to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
Rejecting the allegations, BJP leaders dismissed the complaint as politically motivated and said the party had full faith in constitutional institutions.
