Trump Calls Iran Leadership Change Amid Protests

US President Donald Trump has called for the end of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s long rule. He made the remarks during an interview with Politico on Saturday. Trump said Iran needs new leadership after weeks of nationwide protests.

Trump accused Iran’s leadership of relying on repression and violence. He blamed Khamenei for destroying the country and creating fear. Trump said leadership should depend on respect, not intimidation. He also described Khamenei as responsible for widespread suffering.

Khamenei responded with strong language. He vowed to crush what he called sedition and domestic criminal activity. He accused the United States of fueling unrest. Iranian authorities labeled the protests as foreign-backed riots. Security forces have reportedly killed more than 3,400 protesters.

Trump warned that the United States could intervene if killings continued. He also urged protesters to take control of state institutions. That scenario did not materialize.

Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi urged Iranians to intensify protests. He called on Trump to support the Iranian people. Pahlavi said he wants to lead a transition toward a secular democracy. He proposed a referendum to decide Iran’s future political system.
