Madras HC Urges Centre to Consider Sri Lankan Tamil’s Citizenship Plea Humanely
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has asked the Central government to consider a Sri Lankan Tamil’s request from a humanitarian point of view. The court was hearing a plea from a Sri Lankan Tamil who has been living in India for many years after fleeing the civil war in Sri Lanka.
The person requested Indian citizenship, saying he has no strong ties left in Sri Lanka and has been trying to rebuild his life in India. The court noted that many Sri Lankan Tamils came to India as refugees and are still waiting for proper rehabilitation.
While the court did not directly order the Centre to grant citizenship, it urged authorities to review the representation with compassion, keeping humanitarian concerns in mind. The judges said such cases should not be looked at only from a legal angle, but also from the perspective of human suffering.
The case highlights the long-standing issues faced by Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in India.
