UN chief Guterres cites India-EU trade agreement while underlining the need to strengthen multi-polarity in the global system. Speaking at the United Nations on Friday, the UN Secretary-General said such partnerships show how cooperation can drive shared growth and stability. UN chief Guterres cites India-EU trade agreement as an example of constructive global engagement.

He referred to the landmark free trade agreement signed by India and the European Union on January 27, 2026. The deal aims to create a combined market of nearly two billion people and expand trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

Guterres said the agreement reflects growing collaboration between major economies at a time of global uncertainty. He noted that multi-polarity requires strong institutions, fair trade, and mutual respect among nations.

The UN chief said large trade blocs can help balance global power and reduce economic fragmentation. He added that such agreements should also support sustainable development and inclusive growth.

India and the EU described the agreement as the “mother of all deals.” Officials said it will reduce tariffs, improve market access, and promote innovation across sectors.

Guterres said global challenges like climate change and inequality need cooperative solutions. He urged countries to work together and strengthen multilateral frameworks.
