The Union Budget 2026-27 has announced large amounts of money for new science missions, presenting science as a key driver of India’s economic growth. The government highlighted major projects and special funds aimed at innovation and technology development.

However, many leading researchers say that while the big numbers look impressive, core funding gaps still remain. They pointed out that basic research, state universities, and long-standing research institutes continue to face limited financial support. In some cases, funds are delayed or uncertain, making it difficult for scientists to plan long-term projects.

Researchers said that strong basic research is essential for real scientific progress, and it should receive steady and reliable funding. Without proper support, young scientists and institutions may struggle to maintain quality research.

Experts believe that while new science missions are welcome, the government must also ensure stable funding for existing research systems to truly strengthen India’s scientific ecosystem.
