UP Scholarship Scam: Constable’s Wife Booked for Fraud

A fresh case of UP scholarship scam has surfaced in Meerut. Reshma Saifi, wife of constable Mohammad Arif posted in Kanpur, is accused of fraudulently taking nearly ₹70,000 as a B.Ed scholarship. According to the complaint, she submitted her mother’s income certificate instead of her husband’s to claim the benefit.

Records show Reshma married on 21 August 2022, a few months before she joined Ismail National Women’s PG College on 24 November 2022. As per the rules, after marriage, she had to attach her husband’s income certificate. Instead, she used her mother’s details.

During her course, she received ₹33,710 in 2022–23 and ₹36,360 in 2023–24. After verification, the Minority Welfare Department ordered her to return the full amount. Following a complaint by advocate Mohammad Shahid, Kotwali police booked her under cheating charges. CO Kotwali Antariksh Jain said further action will follow after the investigation.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the UP government will provide scholarships and fee reimbursements to around six lakh students. The state has arranged ₹300 crore to support eligible students, many of whom missed out last year due to official negligence.
