Work From Home Alert: Centre Clarifies Stand for IT Employees

Work From Home Alert for IT employees as Centre clarifies remote work policy

A Work From Home Alert has been issued for IT employees after discussions about remote work gained attention across the country. The Centre clarified that there is currently no mandatory order forcing companies to allow employees to work remotely.

The Work From Home Alert came after employee unions and organisations urged the government to issue clear guidelines for remote work in the IT and IT-enabled services sector. They argued that many jobs can be done online and remote work can help reduce fuel consumption and travel stress.

The demand gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged citizens and organisations to reduce unnecessary travel and fuel usage. He suggested practices such as virtual meetings and work from home wherever possible.

Employee groups say lakhs of workers still spend hours commuting despite having digital tools to work remotely. They believe a structured remote-work policy could improve productivity and employee well-being.

However, the government clarified that companies will decide their work policies based on operational needs.
