Cricket lovers received a shock from the central government after the GST Council announced major changes in tax slabs. Fans attending IPL matches in stadiums will now have to bear higher ticket costs, as premium sporting events are moved into the 40% GST category.

Until now, IPL tickets were taxed at 28%. With the revised slab, an additional 12% has been added, raising the total tax to 40%. The council explained that this category also covers race clubs, casinos, gambling, horse racing, lotteries, and online money gaming. This decision means the burden will directly fall on spectators.

For example, an IPL ticket priced at ₹1,000 earlier attracted 28% GST, raising the final cost to ₹1,280. Under the new slab, the GST rises to 40%, which means the same ticket will now cost ₹1,400. The increase has sparked debate among cricket fans who view the sport as more than entertainment and often treat it like a religion.

The government argues that the new slab aligns luxury entertainment with higher taxation. However, the reaction of IPL fans remains uncertain. With the season approaching, the rising ticket prices may affect attendance at stadiums across the country.
