Jonnagiri to Swarnagiri became the focus of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to Kurnool district on Wednesday. He proposed restoring the name Swarnagiri to highlight the village’s rich gold heritage.
During a public meeting, Chandrababu said the name change reflects the region’s long connection with gold and precious stones. He pointed to ancient records and Ashokan inscriptions that mention the area’s historical importance.
The Chief Minister inaugurated activities linked to the Jonnagiri Gold Project. He said the project will create jobs, attract investments, and support economic growth in Rayalaseema.
Chandrababu noted that investors have shown strong interest in the project. He added that local gold production could help reduce dependence on imported gold in the future.
He expressed confidence that the village would grow into a model settlement. He also said the mining project would bring new opportunities for local youth and strengthen the regional economy.
The proposal has sparked discussion across Andhra Pradesh. Many residents see it as a step toward recognizing the area’s historical and economic significance.
