India is turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to modernize its highways and road infrastructure, with the goal of preventing damage before it happens. Officials say the technology will help improve road safety, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the life of highways across the country.
Under the new system, AI tools will create digital twins of major highways—virtual replicas that can monitor real-time conditions and predict where cracks, potholes, or structural issues may appear. Using this data, engineers can carry out predictive maintenance, repairing small problems before they turn into costly breakdowns.
The government believes this approach will also improve traffic management. AI-powered systems are being tested to analyze vehicle movement, weather patterns, and road stress, allowing authorities to better plan diversions, monitor heavy loads, and even guide autonomous vehicles in the future.
Industry experts say that the adoption of AI could transform India’s vast road network into a smart infrastructure system, where technology takes the lead in detecting risks, managing repairs, and ensuring smoother travel for millions of commuters.
