A programme on “Empowerment of Scheduled Caste Farmers through Millet Production, Value Addition and Inputs Distribution” took place at ICAR-KVK, Banavasi. ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad and ICAR-KVK Banavasi (ANGRAU) jointly organised the event under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP).
Scientists Dr A Kalaisekar, Dr K Srinivasa Babu, and Dr Sangappa from ICAR-IIMR joined Dr K Raghavendra Chowdhary, Head of ICAR-KVK Banavasi, and other officials. They distributed quality seeds, farm tools, and tarpaulins to Scheduled Caste farmers. The aim was to boost millet cultivation and create better income opportunities.
Experts conducted technical sessions on millet farming practices, processing technologies, and market potential. The programme also featured 15 stalls with millet-based products, agri inputs, FPO displays, and live cooking demonstrations. Farmers interacted with scientists and learned how value addition can improve profits.
Dr Kalaisekar explained how IIMR’s SCSP initiatives promote advanced millet technologies for Scheduled Caste farmers. The programme ended with input distribution and active farmer participation. Many expressed gratitude for the support and interest in adopting millet-based enterprises to improve their livelihoods.
