Security has been tightened in Imphal and Churachandpur ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s likely visit to Manipur on Saturday. Officials said both state and central forces have been deployed in large numbers around Kangla Fort in Imphal and the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where a stage is being built for the Prime Minister’s event.
Modi is expected to reach Manipur from Mizoram, although no official announcement has come from Delhi or Imphal. Preparatory meetings have already been held in the state. This will be Modi’s first visit to Manipur since the ethnic violence in May 2023 between Kukis and Meiteis, which left over 250 people dead and thousands homeless.
Security teams are frisking and checking at Sanjenthong, Minuthong, and Moirangkhom areas, which lead to Kangla Fort. Officials have deployed round-the-clock inspection teams, sniffer dogs, and advanced tools to detect explosives or suspicious items. Security personnel are patrolling the fort’s moats and surrounding areas by foot and boats.
Authorities have restricted tourist entry into Kangla Fort and are issuing maximum alert drills under high-ranking officers. Daily security meetings are underway to ensure full preparedness for the Prime Minister’s likely visit.
