Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur this week, almost two years after violent riots shook the state. Security agencies have deployed strict measures ahead of his schedule.
During the unrest, opposition parties demanded repeatedly that Modi should visit and meet the affected families. The demand remained unanswered until now, sparking fresh political debate.
Reacting to the announcement, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said she was happy that the Prime Minister finally chose to travel to Manipur. However, she stressed that he should have visited earlier when people were in pain.
Priyanka reminded that since independence, Prime Ministers of every party have reached out to regions facing crises. She said Modi is following the tradition late, after two years, and should have acted sooner. While welcoming the visit, she underlined that the delay weakened the government’s connection with suffering citizens.
