The Income Tax Department confirmed that September 15 is the last day to file income tax returns (ITR) for the 2024-25 financial year without penalty. Social media posts had claimed that the deadline was moved to September 30, creating confusion among taxpayers.
Officials quickly dismissed those claims. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the department stated that it had already extended the deadline once, from July 31 to September 15. They made it clear that no further extension exists.
The department urged people to ignore fake news and follow only official announcements. To support taxpayers, it opened a 24×7 help desk for questions on ITR filing and tax payments. Officials advised everyone to complete their returns before midnight on September 15 to avoid penalties.
Tax experts also warned against last-minute delays. Heavy traffic on the filing portal may slow the process and create problems. The department assured that its systems are fully functional and encouraged taxpayers to file early rather than rely on unverified social media updates.
