Russia has praised its growing partnership with India, even as US President Donald Trump slapped steep tariffs on Indian imports over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

The Russian Foreign Ministry told RT that India-Russia relations are “steadily and confidently advancing” and warned that any “attempts to harm” these ties will fail. Officials said the bond reflects long-standing friendship, mutual respect for sovereignty, and strategic autonomy in global affairs.

Calling the partnership “reliable, predictable, and strategic,” the ministry highlighted joint projects in civilian and military production, space missions, nuclear energy, and Indian investments in Russian oil. It also pointed to cooperation on payment systems, trade in national currencies, and alternative transport corridors.

The comments came after Trump pushed G7 nations to impose tariffs on countries buying Russian oil. On August 27, his government doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50 percent, souring ties.

Despite the tension, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased warmth with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Tianjin earlier this month. Days later, Trump admitted he “will always be friends with PM Modi” but expressed displeasure over India’s oil deals. Modi responded by reaffirming India’s strong strategic partnership with the US.
