The Union Power Minister, Manohar Lal, urged State Governments on Tuesday to adopt reforms to reduce the debt burden of power utilities. These reforms aim to improve efficiency and ensure a reliable power supply to consumers.

Speaking at a meeting with State Power Ministers, Minister Lal stressed the importance of operational and financial health in power distribution. He emphasized the need for timely installation of prepaid smart meters in all government establishments.

The Minister also urged States to reaffirm their commitment to providing “Power for all” efficiently, sustainably, and cost-effectively. He highlighted the importance of cost-reflective tariffs and the timely payment of subsidies and government dues.

The discussions also focused on the gravity of the debt burden on distribution utilities. The central government, states, and regulators must work together to address these issues, ensuring that the reforms prevent a recurrence of financial crises in the future.
