Protests Against Migrant Labour Threaten Punjab’s Economy

Punjab’s migrant labour crisis intensifies as protests threaten the state's economy. The MSME Forum urges action from CM Bhagwant Mann.

The rising protests against migrant workers in Punjab have created panic among industrialists and workers alike. The MSME Forum, representing 2,000 small and medium businesses, has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for intervention to safeguard the rights of migrant workers.

Badish Jindal, president of the MSME Forum, stated that over 18 lakh migrant workers play a key role in Punjab’s industries and agriculture, contributing significantly to the state’s economy. In Ludhiana, around 8 lakh migrant workers are employed in industries, and many others work in farming and domestic sectors.

Jindal warned that ongoing protests could lead to an exodus of migrant workers, crippling Punjab’s industries and economy. He urged the state government to take action against those inciting violence and ensure the protection of migrant workers’ livelihoods.

The situation is also leading to reports of exploitation, with migrants facing robberies and harassment. The MSME Forum has called for immediate measures to prevent further damage to the state’s industrial and economic stability.
