In a landmark achievement, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has won the Punjab University Student Council President post after 48 years . Gaurav Veer Sohal, a research student from the University Institute of Legal Studies, secured 3,148 votes , defeating his closest competitor, Sumit Sharma, by a margin of 488 votes. Sumit Sharma, representing the Students’ Front and Alliance, received 2,660 votes.

After his victory, Sohal stated, “I am delighted that our team’s hard work has paid off. Despite questions raised about ABVP’s proximity to university authorities , we want to clearly and loudly declare that we will fight for students’ rights, irrespective of affiliations.”

Last year, although the ABVP presidential candidate came third, the organization entered the council by winning the Joint Secretary post after 12 years . Previously, in 2013, ABVP secured the Vice President post. The ABVP collaborated with other student bodies, including PUSU and INSO, to strengthen its presence in the council, marking a historic comeback at Punjab University.
