Afghanistan Earthquake Aftershocks Injure 10 More, Worsen Damage

Afghanistan Earthquake

A series of aftershocks from the deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan injured 10 more people and caused additional damage, Taliban authorities confirmed on Friday. The aftershocks, including the strongest one measuring 5.6 in magnitude, shook Kabul and even the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, on Thursday night and Friday morning.

The aftershocks struck eight provinces, with Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman suffering the worst. These areas had already been hit hard by the initial earthquake, which left over 3,700 people injured and more than 2,200 dead. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck on Sunday night, becoming one of the deadliest quakes in the region in decades.

In Nuristan province, residents like Enamullah Safi rushed out of their homes as aftershocks shook the area. “We are still afraid and haven’t returned to our homes,” Safi said. Many houses were damaged or destroyed, and aid has been slow to reach these areas due to landslides and rockfalls blocking the roads.

Afghanistan already faces widespread poverty, drought, and an influx of displaced people. These challenges make the ongoing disaster even harder to manage.
