The Afghanistan earthquake kills 800 people and leaves more than 2,500 injured in the eastern provinces. The powerful 6.0-magnitude quake struck late Sunday near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, with its epicenter in Kunar. Tremors shook towns at 11:47 p.m., collapsing poorly built homes and triggering panic across villages.
Rescue teams and locals rushed to pull survivors from rubble through the night. Footage showed injured people carried on stretchers and loaded into helicopters. Many victims came from rural areas where houses were made of mud and bricks, which crumbled under the impact. Several aftershocks deepened the crisis.
A Taliban spokesperson confirmed that most deaths occurred in Kunar province. Officials admitted that low-rise concrete structures and poor construction quality made the damage worse. Desperate families continued digging with bare hands to search for missing relatives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He assured that India stands ready to provide humanitarian aid and relief. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan,” he posted on X. The disaster marks one of the deadliest quakes in the region in recent years.
