Punjab Police have identified two suspects in a major cyber fraud case linked to former Inspector General of Police Amar Singh Chahal, officials said on Wednesday. Investigators believe the accused allegedly duped Chahal of nearly ₹8 crore through an online scam.

According to police sources, one suspect is a resident of Patiala, while the other is based in Mumbai. The identification followed a detailed examination of digital evidence recovered from Chahal’s mobile phone. Investigators have also questioned several individuals connected to a WhatsApp group that reportedly included serving and retired senior IPS officers.

The case gained wider attention after Chahal allegedly shot himself on Monday, reportedly distressed over the financial fraud. He was rushed to hospital by family members and underwent a prolonged surgery. Doctors said his condition is now stable, though he remains unfit to record a statement. Police officials said they will wait for his full recovery before questioning him.

An FIR was registered by the Patiala cyber crime wing based on details mentioned in a letter Chahal reportedly wrote before the incident. The case has been filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, including provisions related to cheating and cyber fraud.

Police said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses. Authorities are also examining money trails and digital transactions to establish the full scope of the alleged scam.
