Amit Shah Calls for Global-Standard Prison Cells to Tackle Fugitives Abroad
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday reaffirmed India’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminals operating from foreign countries. Addressing a gathering of state officials, Shah urged all States and Union Territories to establish at least one prison cell of international standards. This move aims to counter a common argument used by fugitives in foreign courts — that Indian jails lack basic standards and humane conditions. Such claims often delay or block extradition proceedings. Shah emphasized that improving prison infrastructure will strengthen India’s legal position globally and help bring fugitives to justice faster. He also highlighted the need for coordinated efforts among states and central agencies to crack down on transnational crime networks. The directive aligns with India’s broader strategy of modernizing internal security systems and ensuring that fugitives can no longer exploit legal loopholes to evade accountability. States are expected to act swiftly on the Home Ministry’s recommendation.
