Parole denial row surfaced again as Amritpal Singh, MP from Khadoor Sahib, challenged the Punjab Government’s decision in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The MP argued that the state rejected his request for temporary release in an arbitrary and cryptic way. His plea highlighted that the order lacked a valid basis. The parole denial row gained more weight when he cited the case of Engineer Rashid, who received permission from a Delhi court to attend Parliament.
Amritpal Singh approached the court after the government refused to allow him to join the winter session of Parliament scheduled from December 1 to 19. His counsel told the court that the state ignored previous directions by dismissing the application without proper reasoning.
A Division Bench led by Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra listed the matter for hearing on Monday. The petition will likely go before Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, who earlier asked the Home Secretary to decide the plea before the Parliament session.
Amritpal claimed the detention was politically driven and aimed at silencing an elected representative of 19 lakh voters. He also argued that his visit to Parliament would not affect Punjab’s law and order since it lies outside the state.
