Assam earthquake tremors felt across parts of the Northeast after an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the region on Monday, officials said. The tremors were experienced in several districts of Assam and were also felt in neighbouring Meghalaya, causing panic among residents.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred in the early hours, with its epicentre located within Assam. The tremor lasted for a few seconds but was strong enough to prompt people to rush out of their homes as a precautionary measure.
Residents in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and surrounding areas reported noticeable shaking of buildings. In Meghalaya, tremors were felt in Shillong and nearby towns. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage to property.
Officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said they were monitoring the situation closely. District administrations were asked to remain alert and gather information from vulnerable areas. Emergency response teams were kept on standby as a precaution.
Meanwhile, authorities advised people to stay calm and follow safety protocols during aftershocks. Experts said earthquakes of moderate intensity are not uncommon in the Northeast, which falls under a high seismic zone.
Assam and Meghalaya lie in Seismic Zone V, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the country. In the past, the region has witnessed several moderate to strong earthquakes, prompting authorities to emphasise disaster preparedness and awareness.
Geologists said the tremor likely resulted from tectonic activity along fault lines in the region. They added that aftershocks cannot be ruled out and urged residents to remain cautious.
The Assam earthquake tremors felt across the region once again highlighted the need for earthquake-resistant infrastructure and regular safety drills to minimise risks in future events.
