The Zubeen Garg death case took a dramatic turn on Thursday after Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team filed a chargesheet in a Guwahati court. The development came three months after the iconic Assamese singer died in Singapore. His death had drawn massive public outcry, with fans demanding justice from day one.
The SIT submitted the chargesheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate under tight security. The team added serious sections, including murder, criminal conspiracy, and negligence leading to death. Earlier, the Assam government had formed the SIT to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Garg died on 19 September while swimming in Singapore, where he was present as the cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival. Singapore authorities ruled out foul play and sent post-mortem as well as toxicology reports to Assam.
However, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed Singapore Police’s conclusion. He told the Assembly that the investigation clearly indicated a direct murder, not an accident. He said one accused carried out the killing and others assisted him. Sarma added that more revelations could shock the people of Assam.
With the chargesheet now filed, the case is set to move into a crucial legal phase that may reshape the narrative around the singer’s tragic death.
