Assam Horror Killing Witchcraft allegations led to a brutal double murder in the Karbi Anglong district, sending shockwaves across the state. A husband and wife were allegedly beaten and burnt alive by villagers who suspected them of practising witchcraft.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night in No. 1 Beloguri Munda village under the Howraghat area. Police said a group of villagers stormed the couple’s house and attacked them with sharp weapons. The attackers then set the house on fire, trapping the victims inside. Both died on the spot due to severe burn injuries.
The deceased were identified as 43-year-old Gardi Birowa and his 33-year-old wife, Meera Birowa. Locals reportedly believed the couple caused misfortune and illnesses in the village through occult practices. Acting on superstition, the mob took the law into its own hands.
Senior police officials reached the site soon after receiving information. Authorities sealed the area and launched a manhunt to arrest those involved. Police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
Officials said blind faith and rumours continue to influence remote areas. They warned that branding someone a witch and committing violence is a serious crime. The administration urged residents to reject superstition and report concerns directly to the police.
