Assam Voter List Grows even as several other states recorded sharp declines during the Special Intensive Revision process. The latest draft electoral roll released by the Assam Election Commission has surprised political observers and voters alike.
While states like Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh saw voter numbers drop between 6 and 14 percent, Assam reported a 1.35 percent increase. Compared with the January 2025 roll, the state added nearly 3.4 lakh net voters.
Officials clarified that Assam did not conduct a full Special Intensive Revision. Instead, the state carried out a special revision focused on verification. Fake and deceased voters were identified, but removals followed a slower legal process.
The Election Commission linked this approach to the ongoing NRC process. Citizenship verification in Assam remains under Supreme Court supervision. Election officials said separate legal provisions apply to the state.
Between January and December, around 7.86 lakh new voters were added. During the same period, authorities removed about 4.47 lakh names. Women voters now slightly outnumber men in Assam.
Block-level verification identified nearly 10 lakh questionable entries. These include deceased, shifted, and duplicate voters. However, officials said names can only be deleted after formal applications under the Representation of People Act.
This procedural difference explains why Assam’s voter list grew, unlike SIR states where deletions were automatic.
