Tezpur University in Assam remains shut for the sixth consecutive day as students intensify their demand for the removal of Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh over alleged corruption and financial irregularities. The agitation, ongoing since mid-September, escalated on 29 November when students suspended all academic activities indefinitely.

Despite limited morning relaxations for urgent departmental work, the shutdown continues. Meanwhile, teachers and staff have rejected Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s suggestion to appoint a Pro-Vice-Chancellor. The Tezpur University United Forum (TUUF) stated that their demand is not for a Pro-VC but for an immediate appointment of an acting VC and suspension of the current one. They also accused the CM of remaining silent for 76 days until the issue gained national attention.

Assam Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi also criticised the CM, accusing him of trying to shield the VC. He added that the VC had previously faced a financial probe during his tenure at Patna University. With end-term exams cancelled and the VC staying away from campus since a September confrontation, unrest on campus continues to grow.
