Awami League Slams Verdict as Hasina Faces Death Sentence in Bangladesh Crisis

The Awami League has fiercely attacked the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus after the court sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. The ruling followed last year’s deadly student uprising, which toppled her long rule and left hundreds dead. Although the tribunal delivered the verdict, senior Awami League leaders claim the process lacked legitimacy.

Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, a former minister and close aide to Hasina, argued that the trial ignored basic legal standards. Moreover, he said the judgement looked “pre-written” and designed to silence the party. He added that the tribunal operated without lawful authority because the interim government changed its rules without a mandate.

Chowdhury also accused officials of blocking Hasina from selecting her legal team. Senior lawyers who offered to defend her were denied entry to the court. Consequently, he described the process as a political drama meant to intimidate opponents.

Despite the ban on the Awami League, Chowdhury insisted the party still holds broad public support. He challenged the Yunus administration to allow them into the February election, arguing that voters should decide the country’s direction.

Additionally, he warned that the regime’s alleged links to Pakistan-based extremist groups threaten regional stability. The Awami League has now called for a national shutdown to protest the verdict.
