Banks will remain closed today in several parts of India’s Northeast due to a region-specific holiday, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar. However, customers can continue to access digital banking services, ensuring minimal disruption to financial transactions.
Banks Closed in Select Northeastern States
The bank holiday applies to selected states in the Northeast where local observances or state-specific events are marked as public holidays. On this day, branches of public sector banks, private banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks will not operate in the affected areas.
Officials clarified that the holiday is not nationwide and that banks in other parts of the country will function as usual.
Digital Banking Services to Function Normally
Despite the closure of physical branches, essential digital services will remain fully operational. Customers can use internet banking, mobile banking apps, UPI platforms, ATMs, and card-based transactions without interruption.
Services such as fund transfers, bill payments, balance inquiries, and online shopping payments will continue seamlessly. Banks have advised customers to rely on digital channels for urgent financial needs during the holiday.
Customers Advised to Plan Branch Visits
Bank officials urged customers in the affected states to plan branch-related work accordingly. Services such as cheque clearance, cash deposits, loan documentation, and in-person customer support will resume on the next working day.
The RBI publishes a state-wise holiday list each year, considering regional festivals and administrative observances. Customers are encouraged to check their respective bank’s holiday schedule to avoid inconvenience.
With digital banking playing a growing role, the impact of regional bank holidays has significantly reduced, allowing customers to manage most transactions online even when branches remain shut.
