Bawankule Defends Unopposed Wins in Maharashtra Civic Polls

Chandrashekhar Bawankule defends unopposed wins in Maharashtra civic polls

Senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule defended the unopposed victories of ruling alliance candidates in Maharashtra ahead of the January 15 municipal corporation elections. He said such wins are “good for democracy” and reflect voter confidence in the nominees.

Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray appealed to the State Election Commission to cancel the results in 68 civic wards. He argued that unopposed wins weaken competitive democracy and warned against “mobocracy.”

Bawankule responded that the elections followed all rules. Moreover, he said the results show public trust in the candidates. “The ruling alliance nominees received strong local support, which explains the unopposed victories,” he added.

Political analysts said unopposed wins are unusual and often spark debate. While ruling parties view them as proof of popularity, opposition leaders see them as a challenge to democratic fairness.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Election Commission has received multiple complaints regarding the 68 wards. Officials said they will review the representations carefully and act according to electoral laws.

Bawankule also emphasised that the party selected candidates after thorough consultations. He added that respecting democratic norms remains a priority.

Analysts said the dispute highlights rising political tensions ahead of municipal polls. They noted that how the Election Commission responds could affect voter sentiment and influence future results.

Furthermore, Bawankule said the ruling alliance plans to maintain transparency in campaigning. He encouraged voters to participate actively and noted that unopposed wins do not reduce the importance of the elections.
