BBC Chief and Head of News Resign Over Trump Documentary Controversy
BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness have resigned following backlash over a Trump documentary edit. The controversy erupted after reports revealed that excerpts of a Donald Trump speech were edited to suggest he had incited the January 6 Capitol riot. The edits sparked political criticism and raised fresh questions about BBC’s impartiality.
In his statement, Davie said his decision to step down was entirely his own, expressing gratitude to the BBC Chair and Board for their support “throughout my entire tenure, including during recent days.” Turness also cited accountability for editorial standards as the reason for her resignation. The twin departures mark a major leadership shake-up at the broadcaster, which is already under pressure ahead of its 2027 charter renewal. The BBC said interim leaders will be appointed while a search for permanent successors begins.
