The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) has issued a medical update regarding India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill, confirming that he is yet to fully recover from the neck injury sustained during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. While Gill is feeling better, his chances of playing in the second Test remain low, though not entirely ruled out.

Gill suffered the injury on Day 2 of the first Test, forcing him to retire hurt and preventing him from batting in the second innings as well. He was taken to the hospital after the day’s play and was discharged the following day. India eventually lost the Kolkata Test by 30 runs, highlighting the impact of Gill’s absence in the batting lineup.

In its latest update issued on November 19, BCCI stated that Shubman Gill was evaluated for a neck strain and kept under observation before being discharged. He will travel with the Indian team to Guwahati on November 19, where the second Test will be played at Barsapara Cricket Stadium from November 22.

The board further confirmed that its medical team will continue to monitor Gill, and a final decision on his participation will be taken on November 21. Although the injury is not severe, team management is cautious, as playing prematurely could worsen the condition and become a major setback for India.

Team India is set to begin the second Test in Guwahati on November 22, with Gill accompanying the squad. However, his likelihood of taking the field remains slim unless the medical team gives full clearance.
