Bengal CM Resigns from MLA Post After Dual Election Win

Bengal CM resigns from MLA post after winning Nandigram and Bhabanipur

Bengal CM resigns from MLA post after winning from two constituencies in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, stepped down from the Nandigram Assembly seat and submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker on Wednesday.

Bengal CM resigns from MLA post because election rules do not allow a leader to represent two constituencies at the same time. Adhikari had contested from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur and won in both seats.

His victory in these important constituencies created a major moment in the state’s politics. Adhikari had earlier defeated former chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections.

Following the election results, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a strong majority in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly. The victory ended more than a decade of rule by the All India Trinamool Congress government.

Adhikari later took oath as the chief minister of West Bengal. After deciding to retain the Bhabanipur seat, he formally resigned from the Nandigram constituency as required by election rules.
