Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur constituency has recorded nearly four times more voter deletions than Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Nandigram, adding fresh political heat to West Bengal’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Data released by the Election Commission shows Bhabanipur logged 44,787 deletions from a voter base of 2.06 lakh, while Nandigram saw 10,599 names removed from over 2.78 lakh voters.

The Election Commission classified deletions under routine categories such as deaths, relocation, duplicate entries, and untraceable voters. Officials insist the process followed uniform rules across the state. Despite attention on Bhabanipur, it did not top the list. Chowringhee recorded the highest deletions at 74,553, followed by Kolkata Port with 63,730 and Ballygunge with 65,171.

District-wise data placed South 24 Parganas at the top with over 8.16 lakh deletions, while Kotulpur in Bankura saw the lowest removals. Statewide, more than 58 lakh names were deleted in the first SIR phase.

The figures triggered sharp reactions. The TMC said it would closely examine the data, while the BJP argued the deletions expose fake voters. With draft rolls due next week and the 2026 Assembly polls approaching, the voter revision exercise is set to dominate Bengal’s political debate.
