The Bhajanlal government has sparked political unrest in western Rajasthan after altering district boundaries in Barmer and Balotra. The decision triggered sharp protests from Congress leaders, who called it politically motivated. The BJP defended the move, calling it administrative and public-oriented.

Senior Congress leader Hemaram Chaudhary sat on a dharna at the Dhorimanna subdivision headquarters. He joined local residents and vowed to continue protesting until the decision is withdrawn. While addressing the media, Chaudhary turned emotional and broke down in tears. He said the move ignored public sentiment and hurt regional identity.

The government has already begun implementing the decision. Authorities started repainting government offices, schools, and buildings with “District Balotra” signage. This step signaled that the government will not reconsider the order.

The previous Congress government had created Balotra as a separate district. Baytu tehsil was included in Balotra, while Gudamalani and Dhorimanna remained in Barmer. On December 31, 2025, the Bhajanlal government approved changes and issued orders on January 2, 2026. Baytu moved back to Barmer, while Gudamalani and Dhorimanna shifted to Balotra. The reshuffle upset many residents.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called the decision a “Tughlaqi order.” Baytu MLA Harish Chaudhary alleged caste-based targeting. BJP leaders rejected the claims and said the change benefits governance and cultural alignment.
