The number of Bihar crorepati MLAs is rising fast, and poor leaders are slowly disappearing from the state Assembly. In the 2025 elections, Bihar crorepati MLAs made up almost 90% of the 243 winners. This shows how money is becoming a powerful force in politics.
Out of 243 new MLAs, 218 are crorepatis. Only 25 MLAs have assets below one crore. The poorest is Murari Paswan of Pirpainti, with assets of just ₹6.53 lakh. The richest is BJP’s Kumar Pranay from Munger, with assets worth ₹170 crore.
ADR reports show how this trend grew over the years. In 2010, only 20% of MLAs were crorepatis. The number rose to 67% in 2015, 81% in 2020, and now a record-breaking 90% in 2025. The average assets of MLAs increased from ₹82 lakh in 2010 to ₹9 crore in 2025.
Among parties, JDU leads with 78 crorepati MLAs, followed by BJP with 77. RJD has 24, LJP-R has 16, and almost every party has crorepati MLAs.
This shift shows how money power is shaping modern elections in Bihar.
